Mulva Center

Housed in a dramatic and contemporary space designed by acclaimed architects SOM (Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP), the Mulva Cultural Center is a showcase for creative arts and cultural programs. We created four new David Harber sculptures for this cultural destination with the standout piece being the 10-foot-tall Mobius sculpture.

Design details

Modern building with large glass entrance, wide steps, and a metallic overhang. In front stands a Mobius Ring filled in with individual shards of Welsh slate at Mulva Cultural Center. Neatly trimmed shrubs line the clean, well-maintained walkway.

Always fascinated and inspired by geometry and optical illusions, we drew on the mathematically mystifying Möbius strip – an infinite loop with a half-twist – to create a 10-foot Mobius sculpture for one of the center’s entrances

A close-up view of a contemporary Mobius Ring filled in with individual shards of Welsh slate at Mulva Cultural Center. The curved structure, outlined by smooth stone trim, rises against a cloudy sky, emphasizing texture and elegant lines.

Technically challenging to engineer and manufacture, Mobius required an inordinate amount of patience and dedication from the team to create the seamless interlocking loop. This was then filled in with individual shards of Welsh slate. Our stone team had to precisely place the slate by hand, carefully choosing each piece to maintain the infinite flow.

Other David Harber sculptures at the center include a 7-foot Geminus in mirror-polished stainless steel with a contrasting hot red interior, and a classic Mantle II. An Alveare screen was installed as a focal point for the center’s outside seating area.

A rooftop patio features two black woven chairs and two round white tables, facing a decorative wall panel. Nearby, the Geminus in mirror-polished stainless steel with a contrasting hot red interior adds a contemporary abstract sculpture flair to the Mulva Cultural Center.
Mantle II in verdigris bronze and 24-carat gold leaf, this contemporary abstract sculpture is a large, spherical piece with a lattice of irregular gold shapes, partially hollow and intricately designed, reflecting the space around it.
