Saga Cruises
Hidden from view, yet the driving force of any voyage, propellers are the physical embodiment of discovery and adventure at sea. We wanted to take inspiration from the power of the propeller to create two unique pieces for one of the decks on the British cruise liner, ‘The Spirit of Discovery’. One to echo the shape of a propeller and one to represent the vortex of hydraulic energy found immediately in its wake.
Design details
Discovery
These two original sculptures make up part of an impressive collection of 400 original pieces and a total of over 1,000 artworks commissioned and curated by SMC Art Consultancy for Saga. Together, they showcase the geography, landscapes and palettes of the British Isles.
Design
Creating an elegant, seemingly continuous ribbon of metal was a challenge. The desired shape was complex, and difficult to transpose from a sketch into a working 3D model, and a 2D cutting profile. Our talented in-house team used their experience and creativity to persevere and create a striking piece.
Development
Mindful of the harsh marine environment, both pieces are shaped from duplex stainless steel, a grade above the already resilient marine-grade stainless steel. This extra detail ensures the intricate metalwork will maintain its immaculate appearance for the luxury passengers travelling on the vessel, and remain immaculate for decades to come.
‘I’ve always been fascinated by propellers, both hydraulic and air. Their shape is the most exquisite combination of form and function – one that has been refined over centuries.’
