Design details

sentinel in garden

Slate Sentinel explores how two bodies can co-exist in close proximity without touching.

mesmerising reflection created within sentinel mirror-polish

Slate Sentinel’s two halves are split vertically by two internal faces of marine-grade polished steel, creating kaleidoscopic reflections in the mirrored surfaces.

view through sentinel middle

The sculpture’s outer shell is fashioned from a tall ovoid crafted from hundreds of shards of tactile Welsh slate.

sentinel in evening light

At night, Slate Sentinel comes alive thanks to uplighters at its footing.

design drawing of sentinel

The classic design is created using Welsh slate. However, there is always the option to create a customized version using an alternative stone such as marble.

Product information

Slate Sentinel is supplied with a base plate. The client will need to provide a smooth and level stone or concrete pad to attach this plate to. Stainless-steel steel bolts are then resin-fixed into holes and drilled into the stone or concrete pad to provide a secure fixing. The sculpture is then separately bolted to this base plate using stainless-steel bolts. It is possible to supply Sentinel with an LED light for which an electrical supply will need to be threaded through the center of the concrete pad. We supply the driver for the LED.

The finishes used on Slate Sentinel will exhibit some natural weathering with age. However, periodic cleaning will help preserve its beauty. We would recommend that it be cleaned at least once a year with only warm water and a soft cloth to remove any detritus. A garden hose and soft brush can also be used to clean the piece. Do not pressure-wash it, as the water might get in and damage the electrics inside. To clean the stainless steel, wipe the mirror-polished surface very gently with a soft, damp microfiber cloth or tissue. Use of any abrasive cleaner will damage the finish and must be avoided. Maintenance instructions will be issued on installation.
