Starburst

Harwell Science Park, Oxfordshire, England

A captivating focal point and an iconic meeting place on Harwell Science Park Campus. The sculpture is designed to represent the cutting-edge scientific research for which the center is renowned.

Design details

A starburst made of a lightweight material is supported in a stainless-steel ring at Harwell Science Park, Oxfordshire. This large outdoor sculpture stands on a path before a modern building with gold, silver, and glass panels amid green lawns and trees.

Discovery

We felt delighted to have the opportunity to develop a concept sculpture which resonated with our design ethos. At David Harber, we aspire to draw inspiration from physical phenomena and concepts of space and time. This felt like a natural fit.

A large, spiky yellow starburst contemporary abstract sculpture at the Harwell Science Park, Oxfordshire, is suspended within a gray metal arch. In the background, a modern building with green and gray panels stands out in England.

Design

Starburst captures the explosion of energy from a splitting atom. The golden radiating spikes of the exploding nucleus are dramatic yet delicate, made of a lightweight material supported in a stainless-steel ring.

A large starburst contemporary abstract sculpture with a spiky golden sphere stands on a lawn at the Harwell Science Park, Oxforshire, England. Green trees frame the scene, with a modern building in the background under a bright sky.

Development

Elevated in an elegant cradle suggesting a field of energy surrounding the exploding nucleus, the piece was dramatically uplit.  Observers are encouraged to walk beneath it to observe its full impact.
