David Harber at Helmingham
“I never dreamt I would have the opportunity to show my works in what must be one of England’s truly great gardens. What an extraordinarily beautiful place!”

This is a quintessentially English garden of history, romance and beauty. It surrounds a moated Tudor Hall which has been in the Tollemache family since the C15th. The delights of Helmingham’s gardens are many: a classic parterre flanked by hybrid musk roses; a stunning walled garden with herbaceous borders and vegetables, divided by tunnels of sweet peas; and on the other side of the house, classic garden elements include knot and herb gardens plus a quadrant garden of old scented roses.

An apple walk divides the walled garden from the surrounding 400 acre park where there is yet more to see, including a wild flower meadow, a woodland garden and deer.

The gardens were redesigned over many years by renown garden designer Xa Tollemache, three times medalist and more recently, judge at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Xa’s book A Garden Well Placed: The Story of Helmingham and Other Gardens describes her near 50 years restoring and redesigning the beautiful gardens as well as other classic redesigns.
