Elegant Garden Sundial Ideas
Sundials are timeless outdoor ornaments that combine beauty, history and functionality. Once an important tool for tracking the hours of the day, modern garden sundials now serve as decorative focal points in landscape design. Made bespoke to a precise location, a garden sundial can work as an accurate timepiece, become a playful conversation starter, and add a little magic to the change of seasons and passage of time. Whether you’re drawn to classic brass designs or sculptural stainless steel armillary spheres, a sundial will bring charm and character to your outdoor space. Here you’ll find advice on styles, placement, and materials to help you choose the right sundial for your garden.
How does a sundial work?
Garden sundials typically feature a gnomon — a rod or edge that casts a shadow onto a dial marked with hour lines. This gnomon angle has to be perfectly parallel to the Earth’s axis, and pointing true north (rather than magnetic north). As the sun moves throughout the day, the shadow sweeps across these markings, indicating solar time.
Unlike clocks, sundials don’t tell mean time (clock time) but solar time, which varies slightly over the year. The angle of the gnomon, set to match your geographical latitude and longitude, helps ensure the shadow hits the right hour lines throughout the day.
To read a sundial accurately, you simply need to find which hour line the shadow from the gnomon falls on. Our guide on how to read sundials can tell you more.
Does a sundial work on cloudy days?
A sundial needs direct sunlight to cast a clear shadow. On overcast or cloudy days, when sunlight is diffused or blocked, it won’t function accurately as a timepiece. It’s a natural device that depends on the sun’s presence; no sun, no shadow, no time!
Where to place a sundial in the garden
To enjoy both the beauty and practicality of a sundial, it’s important to give its location some thought, and the earlier you can do this in the landscaping process, the better. It’s important to remember that any garden decor introduced into your outdoor space should feel in harmony with the garden design to help your space feel considered and timeless.
Sunny spots: Pick a flat area with direct sunlight for most of the day to ensure the sundial casts clear shadows. This could be on your lawn, patio or a sunny facing wall of the house.
Avoid shade: Trees, buildings or tall shrubs that block light will limit a sundial’s performance.
Focal points: Place your sundial at the end of a path or at the center of a lawn or patio to create a striking focal point. To make a sundial visible from all angles, we recommend fixing it to a plinth to make it a standout feature.
Moments of contemplation: If your space is more informal, consider a relaxed spot slightly hidden from view from the house to make the sundial a resting point as well as a decorative element.
Sundial design ideas for your garden
There’s a sundial for nearly every garden style:
Traditional Horizontal Sundials
A common sight in old English gardens, these classic designs sit flat atop a plinth or pedestal and feature Roman numerals around the dial. They work well in formal or traditional gardens.
Vertical Sundials
Woefully underrated, the humble yet historic vertical outdoor sundial represents quiet elegance, offering a thoughtful and dynamic embellishment to vertical surfaces. As with all good-quality sundials, each design is site-specific – so entirely unique to you – but you can make a vertical dial more personal by adding dial furniture: the name of your house, the year it was built, a family motto, or meaningful quotation.
Decorative Brass Sundials
Elegant brass sundials blend timeless appeal with ornamental flair and can be easily personalized with custom engraving. The warm hue of the brass is a striking accessory to the changing seasons, complementing the fiery tones of autumn and grounding the lighter shades of spring.
Figurative Designs
More unusual pieces, such as our Titan Globe, add a mythical touch to informal garden spaces.
Armillary Sundials
These spherical, celestial-inspired, metal sundials cast shadows across concentric rings, offering both sculptural interest and a more three-dimensional look. The reflective character of our mirror-polished stainless steel Armillary Sphere brings levity and playfulness into the garden, as well as a more contemporary look.
Lunar dials
Take your fascination with the heavens from day to night. This Globe Dial inspired by a 16th century design reads the shadow of both the sun and the moon. Is there anything more romantic than telling the time by moonlight? It will tell the time on the (cloudless) night of the full moon, and on three or four nights before and after as the moon waxes and wanes.
Obelisk
Astronomer-mathematicians in Ancient Egypt used the obelisk’s daily sweep of shadow to inform Egyptians of seasonal progression, with the shadow expanding on the winter solstice and retracting on the summer solstice. Modern day obelisks are powerful focal points specifically positioned so that the length of the shadow at noon can be calculated and shown with bespoke markers set into the ground.
