How does a sundial work?

Garden sundials typically feature a gnomon — a rod or edge that casts a shadow onto a dial marked with hour lines. This gnomon angle has to be perfectly parallel to the Earth’s axis, and pointing true north (rather than magnetic north). As the sun moves throughout the day, the shadow sweeps across these markings, indicating solar time.

Unlike clocks, sundials don’t tell mean time (clock time) but solar time, which varies slightly over the year. The angle of the gnomon, set to match your geographical latitude and longitude, helps ensure the shadow hits the right hour lines throughout the day.

Does a sundial work on cloudy days?

A sundial needs direct sunlight to cast a clear shadow. On overcast or cloudy days, when sunlight is diffused or blocked, it won’t function accurately as a timepiece. It’s a natural device that depends on the sun’s presence; no sun, no shadow, no time!

Where to place a sundial in the garden

To enjoy both the beauty and practicality of a sundial, it’s important to give its location some thought, and the earlier you can do this in the landscaping process, the better. It’s important to remember that any garden decor introduced into your outdoor space should feel in harmony with the garden design to help your space feel considered and timeless.

Sunny spots: Pick a flat area with direct sunlight for most of the day to ensure the sundial casts clear shadows. This could be on your lawn, patio or a sunny facing wall of the house.

Avoid shade: Trees, buildings or tall shrubs that block light will limit a sundial’s performance.

Focal points: Place your sundial at the end of a path or at the center of a lawn or patio to create a striking focal point. To make a sundial visible from all angles, we recommend fixing it to a plinth to make it a standout feature.
